Secret society visited the White House

Cue the conspiracy theories: Yale alumnus and ex-chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers Austan Goolsbee invited members of the Yale secret society Skull and Bones into the White House, BuzzFeed’s McKay Coppins scoops:
Late one afternoon on March 4, 2011, eight college students arrived at the White House to meet with President Obama’s top economic adviser, Austan Goolsbee. The meeting was never publicized, and the agenda items being discussed remain unknown.
But there was one thread that connected everyone present that day: they were all members of Yale’s storied, elite secret society, Skull and Bones.
The secret society doesn’t release the names of its members, referred to as “Bonesmen,” but the Ivy League gossip blog IvyGate regularly has the roster leaked to them. Cross-checking their list with the White House visitor log on March 4 reveals that at least eight members of the 2010-2011 class were present at the Goolsbee meeting.
Skull and Bones has prompted a lot of speculation over the years given the prominence of many ex-members, including John Kerry and George W. Bush. Goolsbee wouldn’t answer BuzzFeed’s questions about the visit.

US officials are seeking the dismissal of a lawsuit brought against the government by descendants of Apache leader Geronimo to recover his remains. The descendants want to rebury Geronimo, who was buried in Oklahoma in 1909, in his native land in New Mexico. They are also seeking the return of body parts they say were stolen in 1918 or 1919 by a secret society at Yale University known as Skull and Bones. But justice officials say the law cited by the plaintiffs is not applicable. In February, 20 descendants of Geronimo filed a lawsuit against President Barack Obama, Secretary of Defence Robert Gates and Secretary of the Army Peter Geren in their capacity as federal officials. Their lawsuit, which also named Yale University and the Skull and Bones Society as defendants, alleged violations of a law passed in 1990 to protect Native Americans’ rights to the remains of their family members. The lawsuit seeks the recovery of Geronimo’s remains “from 100 years of imprisonment at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the Yale University campus at New Haven, Connecticut and wherever else they may be”. This refers to long-standing allegations that members of the Skull and Bones Society, including Prescott Bush, the grandfather of George W Bush, broke into Geronimo’s tomb and stole his skull and other bones to keep in their clubhouse in New Haven. Yale University has repeatedly said it does not have Geronimo’s remains and does not speak for the Skull and Bones Society. The US justice department has now filed a motion asking a federal judge to dismiss the case. Officials contend that the lawsuit fails to identify any cause to waive the government’s sovereign immunity from being sued under the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act. They also argue that the law is not applicable as the plaintiffs do “not allege that there has been any inadvertent discovery or intentional excavation of Geronimo’s human remains or associated funerary objects since the enactment of [the act] in 1990″. Geronimo, who was born in what is modern day New Mexico in 1829, was the most famous Apache warrior. He and his exhausted band of fighters surrendered to US forces in 1886. He died at Fort Sill on 17 February 1909 and was buried there.

More than 100 years after his death the Native American warrior’s name is back in the news when it was revealed that “Geronimo” was the code name used for Osama Bin Laden while the U.S. special forces plotted to kill him. Born in what would later become New Mexico in 1829, Geronimo spent many years successfully fighting Mexican and U.S. armies until 1886. when he and 35 warriors surrendered to Gen. Nelson Miles near the Arizona-New Mexico border. Geronimo was sent to an Army outpost at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, where he eventually died of pneumonia in 1909. In 1918, according to legend, members of the secret Skull and Bones club at Yale (including, allegedly, former President George W. Bush’s grandfather, Prescott Bush) dug up Geronimo’s grave when a group of Army volunteers from Ivy League school was stationed at Fort Sill during World War I. The grave robbers took Geronimo’s skull and some of his bones. On the 99th anniversary of Geronimo’s death a group of 20 of the warrior’s decendants sued the U.S. government, Skull and Bones and Yale in an attempt to rebury their ancestor’s bones near his birthpl In 2010 Judge Richard Roberts granted a Justice Department motion to dismiss the suit. Geronimo’s relatives, he said, failed to establish that the government waived its right not to be sued. Roberts also dismissed the lawsuit against Skull and Bones and Yale, saying the plaintiffs cited a law that applies only to Native American cultural items excavated or discovered after 1990. Though Skull and Bones is often known as a Yale organization, the college has never officially recognized it. When President George W. Bush was asked on “Meet The Press” about Skull and Bones he said, “it’s so secret we can’t talk about it.”Don Oldenburg of the Washington Post wrote: ”Conspiracy theorists have a field day over the fact that Bonesmen were among the founders of the Central Intelligence Agency.
